THE MISSION OF THE SCRABBLE SCHOOL PRESERVATION FOUNDATION
is to preserve the Scrabble School and to share its legacy through educational programs.

The Scrabble School Preservation Foundation was established in the early 1990s by a notable alumnus, the late E. Franklin Warner. After the loss of Warner’s leadership due to his untimely death in 2003, the Foundation was revived by a group of alumni. The Board of Directors conceived the plan to rehabilitate the building as the county’s Senior Citizen Center, with dual use as a Heritage Center working to educate the public about the history of the school and the community it served.

The Foundation has generous grants from the Alice T. Rosenwald Fund of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities, the Jesse and Rose Loeb Foundation, the Northern Piedmont Community Foundation, the Virginia Department of Historic Resources, the Marietta M. & Samuel Tate Morgan Jr. Foundation of Richmond, the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development, and several local philanthropists. Donations of all sizes from alumni and community members helped to complete the funding. Approximately $450,000 has been raised to rehabilitate the building. Of this, the county has pledged $50,000 which will go towards site preparation and infrastructure.

Foundation fundraising is now focused on the interpretive exhibits which will be on display inside and outside the building. To contribute to the development of these materials, please visit our How to Donate page.
